Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Italian Red Wine
Barolo DOCG Red Wine | 14% ABV | 750mL | 100% Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Italy | Slavonian Oak Aged
Process & Profile
Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Italian Red Wine is a classic Barolo DOCG made entirely from Nebbiolo grown across distinguished vineyard sites in Piedmont’s Langhe region. The grapes come from hills within the Barolo denomination, including Verduno, La Morra, Barolo, and Grinzane Cavour, where clay-limestone soils help develop the structure, tannins, and aromatic complexity associated with traditional Barolo.
The grapes are harvested by hand and selected before being destemmed and crushed. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, accompanied by approximately 15 days of skin maceration to extract color, aroma, and tannin.
The wine then spends about two years aging in Slavonian oak. During the first year, it matures in 30- and 60-hectoliter oak casks before moving into larger traditional Slavonian oak vessels for the second year. At least another year of bottle aging follows before the wine reaches its full expression.
Bottled at 14% ABV, the finished Barolo is structured yet elegant, combining wild rose, red fruit, spice, tobacco, and oak with the firm but polished tannins characteristic of mature Nebbiolo.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Wild rose, strawberry, cinnamon, tobacco, spice, and subtle herbal notes
Palate: Red fruit, warm spice, savory herbs, tobacco, and seasoned oak with full, enveloping tannins
Finish: Long and dry with persistent spice, red fruit, fine tannins, and elegant woody notes
What Makes It Special
Marchesi di Barolo has deep roots in the history of the denomination. The historic cellars are located in the village of Barolo itself, where the winery traces its heritage back to the early development of Barolo wine in the 19th century.
The current family has produced wines in the Langhe for six generations, carrying forward the tradition associated with the historic Marchesi Falletti estate.
This Barolo follows a particularly traditional maturation program, relying on Slavonian oak rather than heavily toasted small new barrels. The approach allows Nebbiolo’s floral aromas, spice, fruit, acidity, and tannin to remain at the center of the wine.
Its 100% Nebbiolo composition and extended oak-and-bottle maturation create a red wine with enough structure to pair with rich food while also offering significant potential for additional cellar aging.
How to Enjoy
Serve Marchesi di Barolo Barolo at approximately 64°F / 18°C in a large red-wine or Burgundy-style glass.
For younger bottles, decanting for an hour or more can help soften the tannins and allow the wine’s rose, red fruit, tobacco, and spice aromas to develop.
Pair it with braised or roasted red meats, game, rich pasta dishes, meat-filled ravioli, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses. Traditional Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin pasta are particularly natural pairings.
